Water Matters – “Increasing knowledge on the importance of Good status of Water Bodies” campaign, funded by “Water Management” Program of the EEA Grants (European Economic Area of the Financial Mechanism 2014-2021) with the Ministry of Environment and Energy acting as Program Operator, carried out the seventh awareness campaign for the sustainable management of water in the beautiful island of Kalymnos from 27 November to 1 December 2023.
In the framework of public and school communities’ awareness, a variety of experiential activities were held in schools of the island from 27 to 30 November.
Specifically, students from the 1st primary school of Chora, 2nd primary school of Poli, 1st, 2nd and 3rd secondary schools of Kalymnos, as well as the 1st high school of Kalymnos, were informed about the results of the project and discussed about good practices of water management, as this precious natural resource is under great pressure on their island due to increased consumption.
Students had the opportunity to observe freshwater animals (Benthic Macroinvertebrates) with the use of stereoscope and microalgae (Diatoms) with the use of microscope and get familiar with these extremely important organisms which act as bio-indicators of the quality of surface fresh water bodies.
In total, more than 250 people participated in school activities.
In addition,a workshop was held in Cultural Centre (Culture, History and Art Hall) of Kalymnos Municipality on 30 November, where the up-to date results of the project were presented by Mrs. Andriopoulou Argyro (HCMR). More than 20 people (teachers, students, citizens, stakeholders) attended the workshop.
Special thanks to Mr. Ioannis Pikramenos who participated to the workshop with an interesting speech, as well as to Mr. Droso Tavlario, who is responsible for the operation and availability of the hall, for their valuable cooperation.
