“Water Matters – Increasing knowledge on the importance of Good status of Water Bodies” campaign, funded by “Water Management” Program of the EEA Grants (European Economic Area of the Financial Mechanism 2014-2021) with the Ministry of Environment and Energy acting as Program Operator, have carried out the second awareness-raising actions in Ios island, from the 2nd to 4th of May, with the participation of Dr. Vazou Elli Communications Officer at EEA, National Contact Point.

“Water Matters” project team in collaboration with the Municipality of Ios, hosted a “science café” in the Municipal Event Hall, where the Mayor of Ios, Mr. Gikas Gikas, attended and addressed greetings. The meeting was attended by the members of the Municipal Council, Mr. Zakhaios Dimitrios, Mr. Karavas Theodoros and Mr. Koritsiadis Plutonas, as well as several citizens, professionals and educators of the island.

During the meeting Mrs Andriopoulou Argyro (HCMR) presented the scope of the “Water Matters” campaign, Mr. Elias Dimitriou (HCMR) talked about the National Monitoring Network of the quality and quantity of inland water while Mr. Roccos (Water Supply Department of Ios Municipality) raised the issues of water management and saving in Ios.  In the discussion that followed, crucial concerns were also raised and valuable ideas were proposed for the conservation of water resources on the island.

In addition, various experiential actions and learning activities (in the field as well as in school environment) were carried out, with the participation of students from all classes of the Primary School of Ios, along with students from High School and Vocational Lyceum. Throughout the training activities, students attended the installation of an automatic water monitoring station in the Mylopotas reservoir, observed freshwater organisms using a stereoscope and measured physicochemical parameters in water samples. In total, more than 230 people participated in all awareness and information actions.
