“Water Matters – Increasing knowledge on the importance of Good status of Water Bodies” campaign, funded by “Water Management” Program of the EEA Grants (European Economic Area of the Financial Mechanism 2014-2021) with the Ministry of Environment and Energy acting as Program Operator, have carried out awareness-raising actions in the island of Leros, from 4 to 6 of April.
During the actions, a science café was held in collaboration with the Municipality of Leros. The action was greeted by the Mayor of Leros, Mr. Kollias Michalis, and attended by the members of the Municipal Council, Mr. Billis Nektarios and Mr. Dimitris Kastis, the municipal councilors candidates Mr. Marinos Tsapellas, Mr. Costas Sifounios and Mr. Manolis Plochoros, as well as several citizens, professionals and teachers of the island.
At the conference, Mrs. Andriopoulou Argyro (HCMR) presented the campaign and its aims, while Mr. Nikolaos Skoulikidis (HCMR) discussed the hydrological regime of Leros island. Valuable ideas for saving water resources on the island were also proposed and discussed.
Furthermore, various experiential actions, field actions and actions in the school environment were carried out with the participation of students from the 1st and 2nd high school, night school and technical school of the island. In addition, students had the opportunity to observe freshwater macroinvertebrates using a stereoscope and measure physicochemical parameters in water samples from various springs and public taps of the island, provided by their teachers. In total, more than 150 people participated in all awareness and information actions.
